Writers' Workshop....
Writers’ Workshop is the writing process in action!
What is writers’ workshop all about?
-Sometimes we start with a mini-lesson which can be about many topics such as: ideas for what to write about, creating good paragraphs, writing good focus or topic sentences, creating interesting details, wrap up conclusions to the writing, and more.
-Sometimes we are working together to learn a specific writing skill such as: letter writing, research reports, opinion writing, and narrative paragraphs.
-The main part of the workshop is for the children to write their own original stories. They may be in any of these stages of the writing process...
*Pre-writing: gathering ideas, brainstorming, planning
*First Draft: writing down the first copy, also known as the “sloppy copy”
*Editing: read the writing to a peer, self-editing
*Teacher Conference: making additions and revisions with me or another adult helper
*Rewrite and Revise: getting the final copy ready
*Publish: type or recopy for final publishing, add pictures, cover, binding
*Share: read to the class, place in writing portfolio
**The best part about the workshop is that the children can work to improve their writing skills based on where they are in their own development.
**The kids just love Writers’ Workshop and I only wish we could do it more because the time is always well spent. It is a great time for me to connect with my students on an individual basis.
